A rare and well struck dinar of Bahram II

SASANIAN KINGS. Bahram II, 276-293. Dinar (Gold, 22 mm, 7.45 g, 3 h), Herat (?). Diademed and draped bust of Bahram II to right, wearing winged crown with a great korymbos on top; long beard tied in the middle and thick tufts of curly hair at the back; two ribbons rising from behind head; deteriorated legend along the dotted rim, running anticlockwise from 11 h to 1 h ‘mzdysn bgy wrhrʾn MRKAn MRKA ʾyrʾn W ʾnyrʾn MNW ctry MN yzdʾn’ = ‘mazdēsn bay Wahrām šāhān šāh Ērān ud Anērān kē čihr az yaz(a)dān’ (‘The Mazda-worshipping Lord, Bahram, King of Kings of the Iranians and Non-Iranians, whose essence is from the gods’ in Pahlavi). Rev. Fire altar flanked by two regal attendants holding scepters, the one on the left wearing winged crown with a great korymbos on top, the other wearing mural crown; to right and left, deteriorated legend, ‘NWRA ZY – wrhrʾn’ = ‘ādur ī Wahrām’ (‘Fire of Bahram’ in Pahlavi). Göbl type I/1. SNS II, type I(1)/1(1a), style I. Rare. A lovely example, well struck and with a fine portrait. Minor doubling, otherwise, extremely fine.
